The Dutch lakes cycling route introduces you to our Dutch lakes, which almost all are made by humans. For instance, by peat extraction: from the Middle Ages large and deep puddles arose as a result of digging the 'brown gold'. After discover the mill technique, these puddles were embanked and reclaimed in phases. That’s how our polders and reclaimed land were created.
Via this route along (almost all) northern lakes of South-Holland, you’ll get a good impression of what the water and landscape of the Rhine and Peat region has to offer in terms of history, natural beauty and pleasure.
