It’s open Monuments Day

Open Monument Day is on September 12 and 13, 2026.

Did you know that Open Monument Day is the largest free cultural event in the Netherlands? The municipality of Kaag en Braassem is participating as well. Around forty of our monuments will open their doors to the public during this second weekend of September. There are many monuments, especially on the island of Kaag. Not all monuments in Kaag en Braassem can be viewed from the inside: at some, there is a sign with interesting information, and you can view the monument from the outside.

In collaboration with Historisch Actief and Stichting Promotie Kaag, Kaag en Braassem Promotie highlights a number of informative (audio) routes. Along the way, you will encounter numerous monuments!

Cycling routes

Please note: all audio tours are in Dutch.

→ Braassemermeer Route (30 km) - you will pass seventeen monuments and hear seven audio clips along the way.

→ Braassemermeer Route (18 km) - you will pass nine monuments and hear eight audio clips along the way.

→ Bilderdam (13 km) - you will pass a number of monuments yet to be determined and hear seven clips along the route.

Walking routes

Please note: all audio tours are in Dutch.

→ Woubrugge (5 km) - you will walk past three monuments and hear seven audio clips

→ Kaag then and now (2 km) - you will encounter no fewer than sixteen monuments and hear twenty-five audio clips.

Windmills in the spotlight

September 12, 20:00-24:00

As part of Open Monument Day, a number of important national monuments in Kaag en Braassem will be highlighted. During this so-called Windmill Night on Saturday, September 12, 2026, a record number of windmills will be in the spotlight. Extra activities will be organized at a number of windmills. Cycle the Eleven Villages Tour

September 12 and 13, 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM

We will guide our visitors past the monuments on a cycling Eleven Villages Tour. A connecting tour: the eleven villages of Kaag en Braassem are linked together by the route. How nice is it that there is something to see in every village?

PLEASE NOTE: The route was developed based on the junction network. However, we sometimes deviate from the route to reach specific monuments.

Photo Contest

The national organization is organizing a photo contest. This is a great opportunity to put the monuments in Kaag en Braassem in the national spotlight. Will you submit your very best photos?
