Geestmolen

For the desiccation of the Grote Heilige Geestpolder, the Geestmolen, a ground-sailor, was built in 1707. On the burr of the mill however, it says 1833, in this year the top of the mill was fully restored.

When in 1960 the axe of the mill broke, an electrical engine was placed to drive the mortar. The Geestmolen was equipped with ‘dekker’ sails in 1933. Early fifties, self-yielding was applied but its weight was a heavy burden for the mill, so the top shaft broke down in 1960. After that an electrical engine was places to drive the mortar. The mill wasn’t driven by wind force anymore and became private property. For a while, André van Duin, a famous Dutch comedian was one of its residents. A restoration in the early nineties made the Geestmolen fully operational again.
