The area has a large number of farmers who make their own cheese, living and working in a polder landscape which is characterised by the numerous windmills. In addition to agriculture and horticulture the water here has also produced a delightful sports culture. The sailing club at the Braassemermeer has spawned many big names in sailing. The Braassemermeer and surrounding bodies of water such as: Wijde Aa, Langeraarse lakes and Zegerplas, form a real jumping off point in the Dutch Lakes area.
