This area is home to many markets and is full of activities. The many villages, such as Roelofarendsveen, Rijpwetering, Oude Wetering and Ter Aar are characterised by intensive agriculture and horticulture.

For more than 100 years the peat and clay polders have formed excellent growing soil, first for vegetable cultivation, later for cut flower cultivation. Behind the self-operated lock in Roelofarendsveen there is a typical agricultural area between the ponds and ditches of the Veenderpolder. By boat or canoe you feel like you’re in a bit of Dutch horticultural history. The area has a large number of farmers who make their own cheese, living and working in a polder landscape which is characterised by the numerous windmills. In addition to agriculture and horticulture the water here has also produced a delightful sports culture. The sailing club at the Braassemermeer has spawned many big names in sailing. The Braassemermeer and surrounding bodies of water such as: Wijde Aa, Langeraarse lakes and Zegerplas, form a real jumping off point in the Dutch Lakes area. This network was used to transport the former merchant shipping from the villages to the big cities. Places where, today, the holiday-maker can find a wide range of activities. Residents and entrepreneurs enjoy a good party from time to time. Consequently, the area has a large variety of restaurants and cafes. The area, along with the Kagerplassen, has a rich programme of festivities on the border between water and land.
